Harry Mazer was born in 1925 to Polish-Jewish immigrants; he was raised in the "co-op" projects of the Bronx, was captured by the Luftwaffe during World War II, has been married for nearly half a century to the award-winning writer Norma Fox Mazer, is a father, and has experience as a teacher, a welder, and a political activist. The author of numerous books for young people - including The War on Villa Street, The Island Keeper, The Girl of His Dreams, and the husband-and-wife collaborations The Solid Gold Kid, Heartbeat, and Bright Days, Stupid Nights - Mazer is known for his pioneering achievements in representing the male viewpoint in young adult literature.
