My book was originally published in 1970 in hardcover and was re-published in paperback in 1992. There have been 14 printings in total.

I have taught Cantonese and Mandarin in Taiwan, Hong King, and now the United States, since 1945. After years of requests by students I decided, in mid 1968, to write a comprehensive English to Chinese dictionary. Since many of my students at the time were in the military or were missionaries, this dictionary contains two additional sections with military and religious terms.

Presently I am working on a textbook which will be geared toward the business traveler who wishes to learn functional Mandarin quickly. It will have an emphasis on business, professional and entertainment terms, in addition to general vocabulary. One chapter will focus on the process and terms related to adopting a child from China and another discusses Chinese medicine. It is expected to be available by the fall of 1999.

About the Author

Janey Chen is a graduate of the National Southwest Associated University of China. She is a former teacher of Mandarin at the Taipei Language Institute in Taiwan and of Cantonese at the Chinese Language Center, the New Asia Colllege, and the Chinese University in Hong Kong.
