His career includes service in the administrations of 11 successive Presidents, including tours as Senior National Security Council staff member for the Soviet Union and Eastern and Western Europe, National Security Adviser to the Vice President of the United States, and Chief of Staff, Defense Intelligence Agency. He is a recipient of three Honorary PhDs, and some of the highest U.S. and foreign decorations.
