The complex agrarian structure existing in rural West Bengal is discussed in depth in this volume. Focusing specifically on the issue of share tenancy, the author builds an historical profile of the events which were responsible for the spread of this system in colonial Bengal and ultimately led to the growth of stringent and exploitative conditions of work which, in time, typified agrarian West Bengal. As for the post-independence period, the author examines tenancy reform measures and analyzes the National Sample Survey data as well as field data. The fresh evidence presented in this study debunks the dominant view that share tenancy is the main cause of the agricultural backwardness consuming the state.
