"Matthew Unstrung" tells a family story
"Matthew Unstrung" is based on the true story of my grandfather, Arthur Atkinson, who was a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University in the early 1900s. His father was a noted evangelist of the time; after his father's death, my grandfather suffered a breakdown and was hospitalized. His older brother rescued him, and the family they recreated between them endured for the rest of their lives. I was unaware of most of this story until I was an adult; I hope the book will encourage people to tell their teenagers their own family stories -- even (and maybe especially) the ones that don't have happy endings.
