Nathaniel enjoys visiting his hundred-year-old grandfather, who serves up chicken salad sandwiches and tells wonderful stories, and when the elderly gentleman tires of his own stories, Nathaniel searches for a way to lift his grandfather's spirits.

Sharing stories is the glue that binds generations.
Greatpaw lives in a house next door to his great-grandson, Nathaniel. They have a wonderful relationship based on stories, love, chicken salad sandwiches and lemonade. In THE CHICKEN SALAD CLUB, I present a model for elders and children, a model of an older person who is engaging and active and an important part of an extended family. Many elders in my life were models for Greatpaw. Into her early nineties, my great-grandmother loved to square dance and hostess card parties. My maternal grandmother lived for over thirty years next to her son and grandchildren, as Greatpaw lives next to Nathaniel. In her nineties, she still loved to trim the lawn and care for her home. A friend of my family is nearing 98. He plants a huge vegetable garden each year, organizes dances for seniors, and until a few years ago, tutored math in the elementary school near his home. These people are real and they are an important part of their family's life and their community's life, as is Greatpaw in THE CHICKEN SALAD CLUB. I hope you enjoy Greatpaw's stories and how Nathaniel insured that Greatpaw will keep sharing them with lots of happy listeners.
