Standards and Guidelines for the Psychotherapies provides a comprehensive overview of the art and science of psychotherapy and a set of practice guidelines for psychiatrists. The main aim is to improve standards and practices, and to initiate discussion.
This book was developed from a report by the Joint Task Force on Standards and Guidelines for Medical (Psychiatric) Psychotherapy, which was established by the Ontario Psychiatric Association and Ontario Medical Association (Section of Psychiatry). The report was prepared in response to four phenomena emerging in recent psychotherapy: 1) The realization that there were no written guidelines or standards for the practice of medical psychotherapy; 2) the changing forces that now influence health policy and funding, both in U.S. and Canada; 3) The potential for arbitrary deinsurance of some procedures in the absence of agreed upon standards, and without regard to the evidence for the effectiveness of psychiatric procedures; and 4) Growing concern regarding the problem of sexual abuse of patients by physicians.
This is an excellent reference book for medical professionals practicing in the field of psychotherapy, and will prove to be a valuable resource in the ongoing practice and development of psychotherapy.

'Standards and Guidelines for Psychotherapies is an almost 500 page fact-filled, up-to-date dependable guide. For an era when it is hard to keep a balanced view of the essential findings on the main therapies, this book offers a firm guide-rail and a focused view to judge the efficacy and comparative efficacy of three most common therapies: psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, and the combination of medications with psychotherapy. The book's balance is steadied by a reliance on the practical knowledge of top experts in the field. The topics are those all of us need to keep up on: brief therapy, couple and family therapy, group therapy, supportive therapy, therapy of children and adolescents, patients with severe and persistent mental illness, psychotherapy training and supervision, and two very practical but unusual topics: consent issues in psychotherapy, and standards and guidelines for psychotherapy record keeping. The final recommendation therefore follows: This book should be kept close at hand to be reachable again and again in times of need.'
'In an era where psychotherapy is threatened by bean counters, bureaucrats and biological reductionists, this volume is most welcome. The contributors have provided a state-of-the-art reference book on the subject that will be of great value both to the mental health professions and to policymakers.'
