As anthropologists, public intellectuals, and feminists, Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead played remarkable roles in twentieth-century life and thought-and far beyond the academy. Dolores Janiewski is a senior lecturer in the department of history at Victoria University of Wellington and the author of Sisterhood Denied: Race, Gender and Class in a New South Community.

Lois Banner is a professor of history and gender studies at the University of Southern California and the author of several books, including Intertwined Lives: Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, and Their Circle.
