Synopsis

This volume on tissue expansion in surgery covers the proper indications for expansion, the procedures for both chronic and intraoperative expansion, the benefits and disadvantages of the procedures, and the management of complications. It includes a general history of tissue expansion and guidelines for tissue expansion technique. The text covers the patient sleection, preoperative planning, insertion of the expander, expansion process, delivery of tissue, and postoperative management as well as the complications and other reaction patterns and dysfunctional changes in expanded tissue. The second section is organized by body areas, focusing on chronic long-erm expansion of gradually expanding the tissue expanders with saline injections before the final operation to correct the defect can be performed. Other topics include the usefullness of short-term expansion and coverage of the more specialized use of tissue expansion and rarer uses of expansion.
