Why we wrote the book
Studying and teaching biblical languages for a number of years, we repeatedly asked, or were asked, 'How do we keep up the use of the languages after we have finished the class, and after leaving seminary?' Since many biblical students do spend time daily in devotional reading of the Bible, we thought we would develop this daily discipline in such a way as to help in language use. We therefore have selected short passages in Hebrew and Greek and included some linguistic tools to help in their analysis. They are organized around weekly topics relating to the liturgical calendar or other matters of practical interest to people, e.g. suffering, life stages, etc. Each daily reading is accompanied by a brief prayer or meditation. We hope this volume will encourage not only an active and habitual encounter with the text, but also its encounter with the reader.
David W. Baker (Ph.D., University of London) is professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Ashland Theological Seminary. He is the editor of the Ashland Theological Journal. Elaine A. Heath (Ph.D. candidate, Duquesne University) is an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church.
