Book Description
Paul's letters to the Corinthians include some of the most significant--and difficult--material in the New Testament. Simon J. Kistemaker's sane and illuminating comments will go a long way in helping students come to terms with the Corinthian correspondence.
Kistemaker's volume on 1 Corinthians in the New Testament Commentary has received words of praise from several reviewers. Writing in Biblical Studies John Proctor commented: "This Corinthian commentary is a patient and lucid exegetical treatment, carefully attentive to the details of the text, concerned to equip the preacher with a sound grasp of the epistle's original message . . . Kistemaker's comments will still hold their value after today's hermeneutical hot potatoes have cooled, and will offer some groundwork for our thinking about tomorrow's new questions. This is a solid and helpful treatment of a difficult epistle."
Willis P. DeBoer wrote in the Calvin Theological Journal: "Kistemaker has given us a wealth of solid foundational material . . . his Greek notes are particularly thorough. Here is a good standard commentary, written in the Reformed tradition, and giving ready leads to much of the literature in the field."
"2 Corinthians" begins with the author's introduction and outline for the book. A fresh translation of each section of text is followed by verse-by-verse analysis. Sections of doctrinal considerations, linguistic notes, and homiletic applications follow. Clear writing, careful documentation, and a select bibliography make this volume a good first stop for research projects.
Simon J. Kistemaker is professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary and the author of numerous studies and commentaries. For the New Testament Commentary series he has written commentaries on Acts, 1 Corinthians, Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter, and Jude.
