Review

Cooking for Beginners is a unique book in its approach, as it explains cookery techniques as well as guiding children through the recipes, step by step, detailing exactly what needs to be done. Accompanying the text are excellent coloured photographs and illustrations.

The opening sections "Before You Begin", show tips on equipment, your oven, ingredients, taking care and measuring with a spoon. "Cooking Hints" includes breaking an egg, sifting, beating, peeling, grating and other techniques. Both these sections are particularly well explained, and really should be read before starting to cook. Especially tasty (and easy to prepare) is the Fish Pie, which comes highly recommended!

Apart from serving as an excellent first cookery book, Cooking for Beginners could also be used in a classroom to reinforce skills and knowledge that are taught as part of Key Stage Two, Science. The book is suitable for children aged 7 and above, though children of this age will require assistance and supervision from an adult in order to carry out many of the recipes. --Susan Naylor
