As an electronics hobbyist and PC owner, you probably own a digital
multimeter and a logic probe. These inexpensive test and measurement
instruments provide enough test "muscle" for many tasks, but just
don't have enough capability for serious work in the world of digital
electronics. What you really need are a logic analyzer and a
multipath continuity tester--key tools for troubleshooting digital
circuits and testing your printer, fax, modem, and other
multiconductor cables.
Using commonly available components and standard construction
techniques, PC Hardware Projects, Volume 1 will guide you through
the construction of an 8-In/8-Out channel logic analyzer (8/8CLA)
and a 25-line multipath continuity tester (MCT25). Once you're
done, you'll be able to put them to immediate use with the full-
featured software included with the book. You will also be able
to combine the 8/8CLA, the MCT25, an appropriate power supply, and a
prototyping solderless breadboard system into a single digital
workstation interface.

the construction process, and shows you how to check your progress.

Chapter 1:

Chapter 2:

tip jacks and plug interconnects, additional parts, integrated
system components, parallel port connection selector, the power
supply, the prototyping area, and the integrated system case.
Chapter 3:
Chapter information includes the construction techniques
refresher, soldering, the solder joint, the right solder, the
soldering iron, wire preparation, stripping tools, tinning, uninsulated
jumpers, insulated jumpers, and component handling.
Chapter 4: Building the 8/8CLA Logic Analyzer
Chapter information includes board 1 (output), board 2 (input) jumpers,
resistors, diodes, and transistors, wire connections, resistors
and additional jumpers, preparing the faceplate, faceplate machining,
faceplate marking, populating the faceplate, securing boards 1 and 2
together, and final wiring.
Chapter 5: Using the 8/8CLA
Chapter information includes installing the software, building up the
test circuit, getting familiar with the software, examples using
the test circuit, and wrapping it up.
Chapter 6: Building the MCT25 Multiconductor Continuity Tester
Chapter information includes board 1 (output), board 2 (input) jumpers,
resistors, diodes, and transistors, wire connections, resistors and
additional jumpers, preparing the faceplate, faceplate machining,
faceplate marking, populating the faceplate, securing boards 1 and 2
together, and final wiring.
Chapter 7: Using the MCT25
Chapter information includes installing the software, building up the test
circuit, getting familiar with the software, cable adapters, identifying
cable interconnections, and wrapping it up.
Chapter 8: The Parallel Port Connection Selector
Chapter information includes disassembling the commercial switch box,
preparing the faceplate, faceplate machining, faceplate marking, populating
the faceplate, and the initial checkout.
Chapter 9: The Power Supply
Chapter information includes commercial supply options, building a power
supply from scratch, power cube operation, building the regulator,
preparing the faceplate, faceplate machining, faceplate marking,
populating the faceplate, and the initial checkout.
Chapter 10: Building A Stand-Alone Case
Chapter information includes materials, initial machining, machining
the case back, making a connector bracket, final finishing, case assembly,
mounting the 8/8CLA in the case, mounting the MCT25 in the case, and
wrapping it up.

the complete schematic, and the CMOS/TTL selection switch.
Chapter 13: MCT25 Theory Of Operation
Chapter information includes the CD4051 eight channel multiplexer IC,
the input block, the output block, and power requirements.
