Synopsis
Published to coincide with the Spring Fashion shows, this is an exploration of the changing definitions and images of beauty from some of the most influential image-makers of our time. Through their words and pictures, they force us to re-evaluate and ask ourselves poignant questions: what would we do for beauty?; what is the new beauty ideal?; do we crave artifice or nature?; how does the pursuit of beauty affect our sexuality?; why do we uphold unrealistic ideals? From heroin chic to androgyny, beauty in the 1990s is emerging as a completely new concept with few enduring rules or boundaries. This collection comprises photographs by over 100 A-list photographers of the top supermodels and commentaries and quotations from some of the most respected voices from inside the beauty industries. Among the figures exploring these issues are Isabella Rossellini, Jodie Foster, Grace Mirabella, Michael Gross, Liz Tiberis, Holly Brubach, William Norwich, Michael Musto, Bob Colacello and Amy Gross. The illustrations feature a range of fashion photographers including Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Kelly Klein, Mario Testino, and Karl Lagerfeld, shooting celebrities such as Kate Moss, Bridget Hall, Linda Evangelista, Amber Valetta and Naomi Campbell. Dorothy Schefer, Deputy Editor of "Mirabella" magazine and Woman's Image Director at "Vogue", has helped to shape and redefine the role of women's magazines in the 90s, creating an intelligent voice for beauty, health and fitness coverage.
