Synopsis
This new series explores controversial topics in science and technology by featuring informative essays, both pro and con, on the major theories, ethical questions and commercial applications of science from all disciplines. Comprised of signed articles written exclusively for the series, each Science in Dispute volume covers approximately 30 issues organized in seven general categories: medicine, life science, physical science, astronomy and space exploration, Earth science, mathematics and computer science, and engineering. Each topic is introduced with a general overview and concludes with a list of key terms and suggestions for further reading sources. Additional features include sidebars featuring biographical profiles of the major players related to the topic; approximately 90 illustrations per volume; and a cumulative subject index.

Synopsis
Each of the three volumes of "Science in Dispute" examines about 30 topics of scientific controversy in an in-depth, pro-con format. Each volume also includes three or four "historic disputes" - issues that have been long settled but which were significant in the history of scientific and human development; these include topics like "Is Earth the centre of the universe?" and "Are Earth's continents stationary throughout geologic time?" Each topic has an introduction, in which the general terms of the debate are delineated, and two essays that take up opposing viewpoints and examine the issue in a thorough yet readable manner.
