Reviews of The Mammoth Book of Sex Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll
'this is a fascinating collection of journalism and essays about the excesses of the rock 'n' roll generation' Glasgow Evening Times

'With this collection of essays and extracts, Driver has condensed the very best of irony-free rock writing into one handy reference work....Essential reading for every budding Keith Richards.' Big Issue

'Several entries in this anthology would merit the entrance price for their inclusion alone: Michael Braun's fly-on-the-wall account of the Beatles in 1963; Nick Coleman on Keith Richards ("the only man ever to look good in a guitar"); Jenny Fabian's afternoon in bed with Syd Barrett; Phil Kaufman on his illicit cremation of Gram Parsons.' The Independent

From the Author

What rock 'n' roll is all about (Plenty of sex and drugs)
The point of the MBSDRR was not to offer the ultimate rock writing anthology - that would take a library of books and a budget a hundred times more than we had to work with - but to pick up the flavour of an industry like no other. Kicking off with the Blues shouters at the beginning of the last century and ending with the likes of Oasis, Pulp and Manson, we explore the force that is the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Much of the writing is fantastic – can the likes of Charles Shaar Murray, Mick Farren, Nick Coleman, Brian Case, Tony Parsons etc, write any other way? – but the central point is to capture the excitement of the subject. We also impart information: we lift the lid on many of the scandals of our era, including Brian Jones's supposedly 'accidental' death, the truth about Hendrix's last hours and so on. There is original testimony, such as the 'stealing' of Gram Parson's body by the man who actually did it, the inside story of the KLF burning of millions by Stewart Home and Jenny Fabian's account of a drug-addled afternoon with Syd Barrett. Much of the writing is original, more again comes from obscure magazines and long out-of-print books, as well as writing from established publications of the calibre of Rolling Stone, Time Out, NME and Melody Maker. We do groupies, we do 'plaster-casters', we do drugs, we do it all... Although I'm biased, I think MBSDRR is a fantastic 620 pages of sex- and drug-fuelled rock and roll writing. Buy it now.
