'Why Mavis Cheek is not as celebrated as Joanna Trollope or Mary Wesley is a mystery. She's got everything they have, in spades. If anything, she's an improvement on them, in that her sense of humour is wicked and her literary allusions wider.' Observer
Mavis Cheek was born and educated in Wimbledon. She worked for Editions Alecto, the art publishers, for twelve years before becoming a mature student at Hillcroft College for Women where she graduated in Arts with Distinction. She now lives with her daughter in West London. Her short stories and articles have appeared in various publications and does as much travel writing as time and opportunity permit. Her first novel, PAUSE BETWEEN ACTS, won the John Menzies/She Magazine Literary Award for 1988.
