Synopsis
From the earliest times, mankind has produced maps in an attempt to record the world. The medieval mappa mundi (with Jerusalem at their centre) were both views of the word and an affirmation of faith. This book draws together some 200 maps from around the world from the earliest recorded examples to the end of the nineteenth century. It provides a definitive pictorial history of mapping and its associated skills in recording humanity's relationship with the planet. It covers the following topics - Why maps? development of cartography; maps for a growing market; types of map; major figures in mapmaking; glossary of cartographic terms; and, middle ages to 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century. It is the latest title in Compendium's new "Panoramic Vision Series" - huge coffee-table sized books which use 16-inch wide pages to present the most beautiful panoramic views of the world's heritage and countryside. It features 300 full colour illustrations, mainly single- and double-page spreads.
