From the Author

New Spiritualities and Christian spirituality contrasted.
Why is a psychologist like me writing about spirituality? Over the years I've watched my profession push aside religion and spirituality. I've also watched the exploding popular interest in spirituality that has grabbed the attention of millions of people.

In this book I give a tour of the current spirituality landscape, summarize many of the popular approaches to spirituality, and discuss why so many people are interested in spirituality and not religion. Then I urge readers to think about their own spirituality and encourage them to be tolerant enough to reconsider Christian spiritualty, unlike many who proclaim their tolerance but tend to be intolerant of anything Christian.

I respect those who disagree with me and I have tried to write a fair summary of contemporary spirituality--even when I might disagree. Then I present a non-pushy encouragement for readers to consider Christian spirituality as part of their "soul search."
