Mastering Dreamweaver 4 and Fireworks 4 is a complete guide for two Macromedia products that are often used together; Dreamweaver for Web authoring and Fireworks for Web-optimised graphics. No previous knowledge is assumed but this title does not explain HTML or other Web fundamentals, so complete beginners may well want a complementary title such as Jennifer Niederst's Web Design in a Nutshell.
After a tour of the Dreamweaver interface, there are chapters on text, images, links to other pages and Web sites, tables, forms and frames. The next section is more advanced and covers managing resources in Dreamweaver libraries, using Cascading Style Sheets, layers and JavaScript behaviours. The Fireworks part again begins with a tour of the product and goes on with chapters on Fireworks canvases, using drawing tools and applying special effects. An image management section shows how to do mapping and animation, explains image export, and demonstrates how to integrate Fireworks and Dreamweaver. There is also a chapter on Flash, Macromedia's vector graphics and animation package. The appendices include a handy reference of CSS properties as well as a complete list of keyboard shortcuts.
This is a clear, well-paced hands-on guide and includes seven step-by-step tutorials on key topics. It is not the most advanced Dreamweaver or Fireworks title but covering the two together makes this a convenient choice for beginning to intermediate uses of these important products. --Tim Anderson
