Windows Millennium Edition, the next generation in the line of Microsoft's operating systems for the home user, provides a significant step forward from the early beginnings of Microsoft's Windows technology. Windows ME Instant Reference aims to ease the path of users wanting to explore the many facets of Windows ME's feature-rich environment.

Targeted at users of all levels, whether it would satisfy the needs of users at all levels is open to question. However, ideally written for beginners to Windows or novices making the transition from an earlier generation, the book provides coverage of all the Windows ME features in a well-designed, easy-to-find, A to Z format.

Most entries in the book display the Windows icon or menu option used to access the feature discussed. For more difficult configuration tasks, explanations are given in an easy to understand, step-by-step order. If you still cannot find what you are looking for within each of the alphabetic sections, the book provides some helpful "see also" signposts and a comprehensive index.

Although clearly not a desk reference (take a look at the companion Mastering Windows ME for a more substantial working of what's required), Windows ME Instant Reference provides a starting point for anyone keen to learn the basics. It will not take you much further than that, but it does deliver as a good value, close-to-hand assistant to sit alongside your keyboard. --Peter Lunn
