Internet! I Didn't Know You Could Do That... is a swift and simple introduction to the many facilities available online--though if you've been using the Net for more than a few months, you probably did know you could do that. The book alternates between useful Web sites and software tools, covering a wide variety of topics. The Help section covers finding drivers plus getting legal advice, medical information and DIY tips. There's a chapter on getting the most from AOL by setting preferences--and using the PowerTools software on the CD.
The simplicity of the book, however, means it's far from comprehensive. The section on chat, for example, mentions only AOL Instant Messenger and PowWow, not IRC or ICQ. The chapter on searching tells you what a search engine is but not how to get the most from it; instead there's a list of the metasearch tools supplied on the accompanying CD, with step-by-step instructions for using the software. Don't buy this guide for the CD-ROM: Most of the software can be downloaded from the Net or is available on free disks with computer and Internet magazines. But if you're sure there's more to the Net than you've managed to find so far, this sort of lightning tour will get you started and it may make a useful present for a friend or family member who doesn't understand what this Internet thing is. --Penny Jannifer
