And the western margin of the loess is exceedingly sinuous--it extends upon the drift in narrow, finger-like lobes, often miles in length, which either alternate and pass into aasar or become involved with drainage lines; and corresponding lobes of drift project in a similar manner far within the general loess oven; indeed, isolated patches of loess not infrequently dot the drift-planes, while analogous, insular areas of drift occasionally appear, completely surrounded by loess. The loess always rises to a higher level than the contiguous drift; loess caps the drift concealing the Niagara escarpment throughout its length; in the northern portion of the region loess forma the highest land within a hundred miles to the east, south, or west; the ascent in passing from drift to loess all along its western limit is from 10 to 100 feet; the loess-lobes are ridges; the drift-lobes (of which those at Farley and Scotch Grove are the best examples) are valleys; the loess outliners are hills; and the insulated drift areas are basins. Yet the same formation descends in absolute continuity from these high levels to the banks of the present rivers. 2. The riparior loess occurs either as the superior member of the aasar, or in lines, belts, and elongated areas intimately connected with water-ways. To the southeastward it is generally fossiliferous; and it is in general more homogeneous and more nearly typical in its characters than that of the driftless area. It usually reposes upon and graduates into stratified sands, which...
