George Emmerson, himself a musician and dancer, traces the history of scottish music from its first stirrings in written records through the pageant of the sixteenth century and the theological and constitutional upheavals of the seventeenth. The place of music in recreation, particularly as it affects dancing, is examined, together with such questions as whether it was once considered sinful to play the bagpipes, whether the Reformers suppressed the music, and so on. With 8 pages of plates, notation for 104 dance tunes and many other examples in the text. There is also a bibliography of printed works containing significant numbers of Scottish airs, covering the period from 1670 to 1900. Also included are John Glen's index of dance tunes which were published in the late eighteenth-century collections and the contents of the principal manuscript collections. (From the dust cover).
