"[Dr. Fanning] is concerned with showing how diverse beliefs and debates about human nature and the human condition continue to be informed heavily by ontologies or theories of Being, each of which is nested in a certain metaphysics... Dr. Fanning blends [his] approach with sociological analyses in order to show how beliefs matter, even in - and indeed in - the secular west. They matter because social, institutional and bureaucratic practices embody ontological and metaphysical views in their conventions and rules..." - Dr. Timothy Mooney Senior Lecturer School of Philosophy University College Dublin "This is an exciting exploration of the Humboldtian idea that states treat their citizens according to their deepest held views on the nature of human beings. Dr. Fanning shows that philosophy matters not to specialists, but to those who organize the world... He is to be complimented on such a stimulating book." - Professor Hugh Ridley Department of German University College Dublin "In presenting us with this insightful and masterful account of the philosophical underpinnings of current debates in social policy, Dr. Fanning makes them as relevant to today as when they were first written." - Professor Gabriel Kiely School of Applied Social Science University College Dublin"
