Synopsis
Gaspar Sanchez Carames, a former university professor of English, lies in a dank South American jail. He has no idea why he was arrested and imprisoned and, when he is interrogated, he does not know what his captors want him to tell them. All he knows is that his fellow prisoner, a man he had known at the university in Cambridge twenty years before, is an internationally wanted terrorist, Paulo Martinez. Gradually Gaspar assembles the pieces of the puzzle. Even details that he once thought were irrelevant start to take on a sinister meaning as he unravels the mystery of his incarceration......
