'The Summer Tree' is the first book of a fantasy trilogy on a grand scale, in the epic tradition of 'The Lord of the Rings'. Five young people find themselves flung into the magical land of Fionavar, First of All Worlds, there to play their part in the vast battle against the forces of evil led by the fallen god Rakoth Maugrom and his dark hordes.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Martin Springett (illustrator). 1st Edition. A scarcely found 1st printing of the 1st Canadian hardcover edition of the author's first book SIGNED by Kay on the title page with a blue ballpoint pen. No authorial inscription or markings by a previous owner. Turquoise paper with gold titles and turquoise endpapers. The true first edition of the opening book in the Fionavar Tapestry. Books Two and Three of the trilogy were published in Canada by Collins. A television production of a series based on the Tapestry was already in the planning stage when we attended an appearance by the author in Toronto in 2019 to promote the publication of A Brightness Long Ago. He was interviewed with the Executive Producer of the series. CONDITION: A tight copy. The exposed page edges are tanned. The corners of the boards are rubbed or blunted, and the heel and crown of the spine have softened. There is a soft dent in the top edge of the front board and the bottom edge of the back board. A barely discernible seam in the surface of the front board corresponds to a shallow channel in the front panel of the jacket. Shallow, circular indentation in the surface of the back board, just below the top edge. The jacket is bright and price intact, and the artwork on both panels is unaffected by the sun, as the photos illustrate. The spine is mildly sunned, and the top edges of the white flaps are tanned. Short, closed tear in the top edge of the front panel and two shorter tears in the top edge of the back panel. There is a puncture in the front panel of the jacket, along the gutter, 3/4 of an inch in length. Softening of the jacket along the top edge of both panels and flaps with edge wear. There are a few, small, unobtrusive indentations in the surface of both panels, along the top edge. Softening and corresponding color loss to the heel of the jacket's spine and the bottom edges of the folds. Bumps to the bottom edge of the back panel, at the fold and at the mid-point, have caused a few cascading wrinkles in the paper, but this is mostly visible from the reverse side of the jacket.
