Edward Carpenter (1844 – 1929) was an English socialist poet, philosopher, anthologist, and early LGBT activist. Born in Hove in Sussex, he was educated at nearby Brighton College. He was a leading figure in late 19th and early 20th century Britain, and was instrumental in the foundation of the Fabian Society and the Labour Party. The last twenty years of his life were filled with a continued political radicalism, marked by his persistent involvement in progressive issues, including environmental protection, animal rights, sexual freedom, the Women's movement and vegetarianism. He wrote on the awfulness of the capitalist system, against the landed aristocracy and for his vision of socialism – a new era of democracy, comradeship, cooperation and sexual freedom.
A study in social evolution. The author believes there exists a great number of intermediate types between the normal man and the normal woman, meaning a feminine body with the mind and feelings being masculine or vice versa. Divided into two parts: Part 1 is entitled the Intermediate in the Service of Religion, and Part 2 is the Intermediate as Warrior. Chapters are entitled: Part 1: as prophet or priest; as wizard or witch; as inventors of the arts and crafts; hermaphrodism among gods and mortals; Part 2: Dorian military comradeship; its relation to the status of woman; its relation to civic life and religion; samurai of Japan, their ideal.
