In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion-in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead. The Three-Body Problem Series"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

Paperback. Condition: New. The Dark Forest is the second novel in Cixin Liu's Three-Body Problem trilogy, published in English by Tor Publishing Group in 2016 and running to 528 pages. Liu is widely regarded as China's most celebrated science fiction author, and this trilogy introduced his work to English-speaking readers to considerable acclaim. The novel is set in a near-future Earth that has learned an alien civilization - the Trisolarans - is on its way, arriving in roughly four centuries. The invasion cannot be stopped by secrecy in the conventional sense: the sophons, subatomic particles deployed by Trisolaris, give the enemy real-time access to virtually all human information. The one thing that remains hidden is the human mind itself. That loophole is the foundation of the Wallfacer Project, a plan authorizing four individuals to independently develop covert defensive strategies, their true intentions masked even from Earth's own governments. Three of the four Wallfacers are prominent statesmen and scientists. The fourth is Luo Ji - an obscure Chinese astronomer and sociologist who cannot understand his selection and is entirely unprepared for the weight of it. The only thing he can piece together is that Trisolaris, alone among all observers, considers him a serious threat. The book operates at a genuinely large scale, moving across generations and cosmological distances, and belongs squarely in the hard science fiction tradition. It will appeal to readers drawn to first-contact fiction, big-idea science fiction, and translated world literature. Part of the Three-Body Problem series alongside The Three-Body Problem and Death's End. Seller Inventory # BMC26262v0kj
