Review

Donaldson wrote some of the very best fantasy novels in his Thomas Covenant series but seemed to lose his way for many years after these groundbreaking books. His fans have been hungry for new fantasy work from him, but whether this book will supply the need is open to doubt. It is, in fact, a crime novel in the noir idiom which has little in common with his early work. Private detective Mick Axbrewder takes a bullet while in the process of shooting the top hitman employed by crime lord "El Senor". Mick's partner (and lover) Ginny decides to hustle them both out of town, but as their relationship unravels, Mick finds that he needs to consult the man he hates most, Marshal Viviter, in order to solve his problems. A tautly written, dark-edged thriller.
