Kawase Hasuiâs elegant landscapes present a nostalgic view of rural Japan. Created during a time of rapid industrialization, the prints are focused on the natural environment. Intense blues and greens reflect the sea and the countryside, while rain, sun, and snow temper the mood. Hasui worked in watercolor, and his sketches were transformed into woodblock prints by a skilled team at the studio of publisher Watanabe ShÅzaburÅ. One of the most prolific artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui produced over six hundred artworks. Twelve quiet scenes are included in this calendar.
