This large nonvenomous snake is native to equatorial western Africa. Like all tropical reptiles in captivity, it requires special care and housing--facts that are detailed in this guide. Volumes in the Reptile and Amphibian Keeper's Guide series present basic information on reptiles and clear instructions on reptile care. Each book includes general information on the subject animal's natural history, distribution in the wild, life expectancy, and physical characteristics. Practical information includes purchasing a good specimen, determining sex, providing correct caging and feeding, health care, and advice for those who want to try breeding. Despite their compact size, books in this series are packed with valuable information for hobbyists and are filled with illustrations of high quality. Each book has 50-to-75 full-color photos, line art, bibliography, and an index.

R. D. Bartlett began his pet fish-keeping when he netted minnows out of the brooks near Springfield, Massachusetts. He moved to Florida and began working as the general manager for Aquarium Supply, a tropical fish, goldfish, and koi wholesaler, and then opened his own pet shop.
Patricia Bartlett grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and began keeping fish at age 10. She has journeyed to Costa Rica and Peru to net and write about angelfish, discus, and knife fish. She is a recent convert to the wonderful world of koi.
The Bartletts have co-authored numerous pet care books, mostly centering on reptiles and amphibians.
