One of the best books about Web publishing in general has spawned a more specialised offspring. Create Your First Mac Web Page in a Weekendis a Mac- and iMac-focused version of the excellent and popular Create Your First Web Page in a Weekend. Mostly, this is an HTML tutorial like its predecessor(HTML is a cross-platform language that works the same on all different kinds of computers). The Mac OS emphasis comes up when the author recommends editing software and goes into some depth on using Adobe PageMill 3.0. The guide also covers Mac FTP software for uploading your files. Regardless, the pages you create under this book's tutelage will work just fine on any computer with a Web browser.
Steve Callahan has great skill in presenting HTML. He sticks to the basics--the HTML 3.2 specification, mostly, which is more than adequate for creating attractive, functional Web pages that can be displayed properly on many different browsers. He covers text formatting, images, links, tables and special characters, but leaves out forms and style sheets. Typically, he'll introduce a new tag by explaining its purpose, then presenting several HTML code snippets that use the tag in different ways. He's lavish with screen shots, so it's easy to see the various effects. --David Wall
