Review

If when it comes to learning to drive your Windows-based PC you hate the thought of hacking through chapter upon chapter of a complex manual before you can even get out of the garage, then this may well be the book for you. Microsoft Windows 2000 Fast & Easy claims just that, "Helping you get to work as quickly and easily as possible". Aimed at those who need to know the ABC of working with Windows 2000 Professional this easy-going, highly visual, tutorial style book, helps to steer the novice user through a variety of tasks with the minimum of effort.

First off there is a tour of Windows 2000 basics including a guide to using the Windows interface and managing files and folders. From then on, you turn into the slightly faster lane of configuring your system and connecting to other computers. Tasks dealt with under these headings include installing new hardware and drivers, and setting up an Internet connection to surf the Web or send and receive e-mail using Outlook Express. To conclude, the book provides a helpful glossary of terms and some preventative tips and techniques to help keep your system on the road.

While the extensive use of screen shots and minimal text-based theory will make this an attractive choice for fledglings to Windows, anyone wanting to advance further may feel the need to look elsewhere. Running Windows 2000 Profesional, published by Microsoft Press, is a worthy candidate. However, if what you want is a non-fussy, step-by-step guide into getting started with Windows 2000 Professional then look no further than this good value book. --Peter Lunn
