Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A clear confession matters most when the Christian church is under pressure.Hermann Sasse (1895-1976) stands among the most significant confessional Lutheran theologians of the twentieth century. In Lutheran Confessor: Hermann Sasse on the Essentials of the Faith, John T. Pless offers a clear and accessible introduction to Sasse's life, historical setting, and enduring theological contributions. Forged amid war, political upheaval, and church conflict, Sasse's unwavering commitment to Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions continues to offer guidance for the church today.Grounded in the Book of Concord and the theology of Martin Luther, this volume presents Sasse as a pastor-theologian rather than a detached academic. Pless traces Sasse's formation within German Protestantism, his experience of World War I, and his decisive role in the church struggles of the 1930s. Readers will encounter Sasse's collaboration with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, his participation in drafting the Bethel Confession, and his outspoken resistance to the "German Christian" movement and totalitarian ideology.Central to Sasse's theology is his insistence that justification by grace alone through faith alone is not one doctrine among many, but the heart of the gospel and the foundation of faithful confession. Pless also highlights Sasse's Lutheran ecclesiology, including his understanding of the church's sacramental life, doctrinal clarity, and public witness under political pressure.Readers will gain: A clear introduction to Hermann Sasse's life and theological commitmentsInsight into confessional Lutheran theology rooted in the Augsburg Confession and the Book of ConcordHistorical perspective on the church struggles of twentieth-century EuropeA deeper understanding of justification, the means of grace, and the church's callingLutheran Confessor is an invaluable resource for pastors, seminarians, theologians, and thoughtful lay readers seeking a theologically grounded portrait of Hermann Sasse and a faithful model for confessing the Christian faith with clarity and integrity.
