Pop-ups are ingenious mechanical paper devices designed to surprise, entertain and educate. For over a thousand years, philosophers, scientists, artists and designers have used paper mechanisms such as pop-ups, tabs, rotating wheels and flaps in books, greeting cards and advertising. This fantastic new book begins with an exploration of the history of pop-ups and moveable books. Throughout the centuries paper has been used in ingenious ways. Volvelles, or rotating paper wheels, were used to make the first calendars, while anatomical discoveries were illustrated in lift-the-flap text books. The Victorians loved pop-up greetings cards and later on, in the 1980s, pop-up magazine adverts came into their own. Now pop-ups are widely seen in cards and childrenÆs story-books, as well as in reference books and as works of art in their own right. Inexpensive and readily available in many colours and patterns, paper is the ideal creative medium. Following an informative section on materials and techniques, over 100 pop-up techniques and projects are shown step by step, with a photograph of each finished item to ensure perfect results every time. The projects are divided by their skill level, beginning with basic pop-up mechanisms such as the V or A fold. Use these basic folds to make a classic Angel Christmas Card or a scary WolfÆs Head. Soon, you will be adding layers, wheels and tabs to produce more complicated designs such as a charming nest of Russian Dolls or a Magic Writing Pencil. All the necessary information is provided to teach you how to make your own unique pop-ups, with over 1000 photographs and illustrations. Whether you want to make a simple childrenÆs birthday card, elegant wedding invitations or a complete pop-up book of your own design, there is something here for everyone. The ultimate practical guide to making your own paper pop-up and novelties, with over 100 innovative pop-up techniques and projects to follow Opens with a fascinating chronicle of paper engineering and inspirational gallery pages featuring work from the best pop-up artists through history Features pop-up projects of every level, from simple cards to more complex architectural designs Learn the mechanics of pop-ups and be inspired to create your own individual cards, gifts and books Includes 1000 colour illustrations and photographs, including step-by-step sequences and a beautiful picture of every finished piece Includes tips on choosing appropriate paper and a comprehensive guide to materials and basic techniques
