When a poet comes up with phrases that catch the eye immediately, like 'The intimacy of silk / In which I wrap up my deepest thoughts' and 'Flowers of humility and perseverance / Spring from the experience of blackness', the reader wants to know more - more about the poet, and more about her (in this case) unusual background. Perhaps the expansiveness, the zest and the gentle humour of Jackline Rukuba's poetry are her father's legacy. He was Ugandan, while her mother is Scottish - and there's a remoteness, a sardonically impersonal eye that marks Jackline's incidental verses which could well be described as 'North British'. It's all to the good, because this poet is also a journalist, with a firm grasp of the dramas underlying everyday life. Her wry apercus of London and its vivid contrasts support this view. Engaging, uplifting and refreshingly honest, In a Heartbeat ultimately sends a message of hope: hope for the people of Africa, for women everywhere, and for the nexus of love across the generations lying at the heart of the family.
