Synopsis

Dust-jacket reads: Britain was still beautiful during the war years - the trees were green, the fields productive with the colours of harvest, the villages contrasting delightfully with the countryside hues - and the scenery was just as stunning in its diversity. In the towns, inevitably more sombre, life went on, with shopping trips needed and occasional entertainments a welcome relief. The published image of these years, on film and in book and magazines, has always been chiefly monochrome, since there was no colour film available. This book of retain was the first to be published entirely with colour photographs from the 1940s. American: servicemen stationed in Britain often arrived with usually a gift from parents eager that their son should retain a visual record of his enforced visit to this foreign land. Some of these cameras contained rare colour film, which enabled Roger freeman to compile two hugely successful books, The Mighty Eighth in Colour and The Royal Air Force of World War Two in colour.
