'Thirteen days ago I made a mistake. A momentary slip, but enough to launch me into freefall, a life unravelling in my wake'
Lewis Penn is a young business lawyer, his currency is mind-numbing detail, his skill is in keeping to the middle of the road. He’s never put a foot wrong. Until now.
Entrusted with a file of confidential papers, Lewis loses them; an oversight that threatens his career, his sanity and, ultimately, his identity.
Every step Lewis takes to cover up his mistake propels him further off course, into an incomprehensible world of Ukranian mafia and industrial spies. Increasingly paranoid, Lewis can only confide in his dying brother, Dan. But as the façade of Lewis’s life cracks, it seems that Dan’s is also riven by deception. Lewis’s faltering trajectory takes him from London to Washington DC and Cape Three Points, where a pivotal moral decision catapults him into freefall.

But one with a subplot that makes for intriguing psychological ambiguity. Radar Magazine - The novel's hero finds himself launched into a shadowy underworld. You can all but see Jude Law in the movie. Reader review - "On Cape Three Points was published in May this year. It is a superb literary thriller that follows the fluctuating fortunes of Lewis Penn, a junior lawyer working at Madison & Vere. Lewis is an all together familiar character, whether you're a lawyer or not. He shares a flat with a mate from university, he works more hours than he doesn't, he goes for dinner in the canteen downstairs every night, and when he gets the chance he goes for a few pints round the corner with mates from his intake. He is surrounded by over demanding clients and over demanding bosses, and spends his life juggling unrealistic deadlines with his family and friends. Knackered, he is plunged into a new job at short notice and makes a bad (but not earth shattering) mistake. Just like 163a. Acutely aware of the need to succeed, the increasingly perverse logic that he applies as he frantically tries to conceal the error is something most of us will recognise. We've all made mistakes and tried to cover them up (admit it, at least to yourself). Lewis makes a mistake, tries to cover it up, but when the initial mistake solves itself, he has to try to cover up his cover up. And it is at this point that his judgment seriously begins to fail him. A series of events are set in motion which range from meetings with the Ukrainian mafia, romantic liaisons with vivacious corporate spies, a desperate car chase across Washington, and finally a journey all the way back to Lewis' alma mater in Bristol. Whilst desperately trying to cling onto his job and sanity and to keep his mistake concealed, the young lawyer's ordered life at the firm and at home becomes increasingly distant. However, as he wades deeper into the mire, he unwittingly begins to realise where his priorities should lie - with his dying brother and some full and frank disclosure the like of which he hasn't yet been required to give. On Cape Three Points is a great read. For the first time, as far as I'm aware, someone has committed to print an eloquent (and at times painfully familiar) summary of life in a big law firm. As well as a breathless sprint through the life of an unfortunate young lawyer who gets caught out, Chris' novel is also a serious study of how our job shapes, or perhaps bends, our characters, throwing events and situations out of perspective. The book is the proverbial must, and not just for lawyers. A gripping plot, a simple yet powerful style that will make his former bosses proud, perceptive but not up itself - a superb read." - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, for sale, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, first edition, signed copies, non-fiction books delivered world wide.
