One of the more arresting sequels is told in Sally Nilsson's The Man Who Sank the Titanic, whose sub-title, The Troubled Life of Quartermaster Robert Hichens is nothing if not an understatement. At the wheel of the ship at the critical time, Hichens was described as a coward at the inquiries, turned frequently to drink, saw a business venture turn sour, ran up debts, was estranged from his family, and attempted to murder his main creditor. He is another example of a survivor who was never the same again, as will be readers' feelings towards the book when they read of a place called the Isle of White. --The Independent on Sunday
This is the Story of Robert Hichens, the man at the helm of the Titanic who desperately tried to steer the ship away from the iceberg. Controversially he survived, evacuating in lifeboat 6 and was vilified as a coward and a bully. With previously unpublished material from the family archive his great-granddaughter attempts to set the record straight. Nilsson seeks to reveal Hichens' true character and shines a light on a new conspiracy theory. --Daily Express
Pilloried for his part in the disaster and buried in a pauper's grave in Aberdeen, the author bids to rescue his reputation. Robert Hichens was left a broken man after being blamed for the Titanic's sinking. Mrs Nilsson said: nowadays, we would diagnose post traumatic stress disorder and he would get help. But there was no help for him. Robert was an ordinary man, overtaken by dreadful events which condemned him to years of distress. By the time of his death he had served a long sentence. It is time for him to be truly at rest. --Scottish Daily Mail
Sally Nilsson spent most of her career working in publishing and exhibition management, and until recently, ran her own taxi company in Surrey. She was born in Southampton then moved to Reigate, where she has lived for the past thirty years. Sally lives with her Swedish husband Paul and boys Hugo and Henry.
