As one of the original breakaway clubs in 1895, the Saints have occupied a special place in Rugby League history. This story of St Helens Rugby Club has been compiled using almost 200 images specially assembled by club historian Alex Service - from its formation by the head chemist at the local glassworks in 1873 to the magnificent Grand Final success over the Bradford Bulls in 1999.
A series of ten chapters encompass the highs and lows of a club that sprang to prominence after the Second World War as one of the game's major powers. The wide variety of action shots, player portraits, team photographs, cartoons and ephemera evoke memories of the great players - from home and abroad - associated with the club and rekindle the excitement and drama of fantastic matches in all competitions, not least the Challenge Cup. The club plans to move to a new stadium early in the twenty-first century and a special section is devoted to the Knowsley Road ground - home os the Saints since 1890 and very much a part of the lives of thousands of 'Sintelliners'.
This is Alex Service's sixth book about the Saints and the first true pictorial history of the club. It is, of course, essential reading for St Helens fans of all ages and, indeed, anyone who wants to recall some of the most enduring moments in the greatest game of all!
