From the Back Cover

Piper Aircraft has supplied at least a third of the light aircraft sold in world markets during its seventy year lifespan, and provided flight training and transportation for millions. In this new book Rod Simpson charts the highs and lows of Piper, illustrating his account with over 200 photographs, many taken by the author during the last forty-five years, but with others from photographers and private collectors.

That Piper aircraft are still produced today is remarkable given the incredible obstacles that have been overcome - the story of Piper is truly one of a 'struggle for survival'. In the early days, C.G. Taylor overcame his grief at the death of his brother and bankruptcy caused by the Wall Street Crash, to form a new enterprise with W.T. Piper, whose leadership steered the company through the middle years of the twentieth century.

The Piper Club, first produced in 1930, became legendary, and so ubiquitous that in time every light aircraft in the skies was known to the public as a 'Cub'. Piper continued to innovate and become leaders in aircraft design, effective rivals to companies such as Beech and Cessna.

The 1970s brought further turmoil, as W.T. Piper died in 1970 and his son left the family firm in 1973 amid a struggle for ownership. By 1995, after an unprofitable period under entrepreneur M. Stuart Millar, Piper had to be rescued from bankruptcy once again, this time by the formation of The New Piper Aircraft Inc., which is, happily, still producing planes.

Piper survives because of the quality of the aircraft, the innovation which has driven the product line formward, the people who have worked for Piper at Bradford, Lock Haven, Lakeland and Vero Beach. Piper Aircraft is a fascinating and informative record of Piper's achievements.
