A survey of the main techniques of artistic production in the ancient world, together with case studies of specific works.
Without assuming any prior knowledge, this book introduces the reader - whether first-year student or interest lay person - to the art of Classical Greece and Rome, with special emphasis on how this art was produced.
First, the main artistic genres and techniques are described, together with the workshop practices employed: stone sculpture, bronze sculpture, wall and panel painting, vase painting and mosaic. In the second part of the book the case studies include not only major works such as the Parthenon sculptures and the Ara Pacis in Rome, but also broader categories such as portrait sculpture and funerary monuments. These are intended not only to illustrate the formal aspects of ancient art or the virtuosity of the artists, but also to show how art was used for specific functional or propaganda purposes.
