Review

Kevin and Perry know next to nothing about either looking cool or getting girls. The comic creations of Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke, they are caricatures of all the worst aspects of adolescent male existence. Hopelessly inept, grotesquely unpleasant, and ill-equipped to deal with life, the characters struck a chord with British television audiences. Indeed, their popularity is such that they've graduated to a feature film--Kevin and Perry Go Large--which sees them in Ibiza on a mission to find members of the opposite sex who don't find them utterly repellent. Not an easy task.

This book is an indirect spin-off from the film, providing a selection of lifestyle tips from the not-so-dynamic duo, who are aided and abetted by Kevin's parents and the lovely Candice and Gemma. We learn the true origins of garage music ("Mike and the Mechanics developed its unique sound"), are offered some invaluable tips on "lovin' the ladies", and even find a guide to "Better Mid-Marriage Sex", which seems to interest the voyeuristic Perry. Packed with slightly rude jokes and plenty of stills from the movie, it's not entirely obvious at whom the book is aimed, but, there is a sneaking suspicion that the true audience is the "old people in their twenties" who are roundly dismissed by our heroes. One thing is certain: if you follow the advice in this guide, it is entirely at your own risk... --John Oates
