The great composer becomes tutor to Princess Victoria. As the possible future Queen there is considerable interest in the child but her mother refuses to allow her to attend court, filled as it is with illegitimate offspring. However, she had not reckoned on a combination of Mozart's powers of persuasion and the parlous state of her own finances, the latter to be resolved only by a personal plea to the King. Then, during their stay at Windsor, a guest is poisoned by drinking from a glass intended for the Princess. The obvious motive is to dispose of her claim to the throne but the factions who could be supporting a rival claim are so complex that it's impossible to pin down the killer's identity. Hamstrung by palace etiquette, but passionately protective of his charge, Mozart eventually unravels a right royal conspiracy.
