Synopsis
Corrosion of reinforcing steel causes premature deterioration of concrete structures on a massive scale all over the world. This corrosion is commonly caused by chloride salts which can prove very difficult and often prohibitively expensive to treat by means of traditional concrete repair methods. Thus, in recent years, there has been intense development of new repair techniques. Electrochemical methods have been widely applied in order to rehabilitate afflicted structures with cathodic protection emerging as the most commonly used approach. This volume provides an up-to-date review of current practice, which should be of use both to researchers and practitioners in bringing together literature from disparate sources. Further, brief accounts are included of recently developed electrochemical remedial techniques such as electrochemical chloride removal, and realkalization. It also includes the use of cathodic protection on new structures and high strength steels in concrete. This book should be of interest to civil, structural and consulting engineers in practice or academe.
