Browsing the Web is one of a series of books from Dorling Kindersley that provides a pocket sized primer to a computer related topic. In this case as with the rest of the series, the idea is to give a complete newcomer the confidence to approach their chosen subject.

The book begins by explaining what the Web actually is, and the standard components of a typical Web page. Then it moves on to browsers, with Microsoft Internet Explorer as the focus. Having ensured you are familiar with the operation of your Web browser, the next part of the book takes you onto the Web itself, explaining how to open Web pages, use search engines and manage your Favourites. From there you learn more about Explorer internals, such as setting the Home Page, managing the cache and handling security settings. The book uses a good mixture of words and pictures to make its points. There are no long paragraphs of explanation, but instead graphics and clear, concise descriptive text.

At 70 pages there is not enough space in the book to cover every aspect of Web browsing, and it is likely you will soon have absorbed all it can teach and be ready for more. But £4.99 is a small price to pay to get you past those first few tentative steps, and give you the confidence to go off and explore the Web for yourself.--Sandra Vogel
