This unassuming little book on getting spreadsheets to produce graphics is an absolutely magnificent work. Part of Dorling Kindersley's occasionally erratic "Essential Computers (Spreadsheets)" series, this teeny-weeny volume is a lot less threatening than the instruction manual that came with your version of Microsoft Excel, which we all know is the god of spreadsheets. It explains in simple terms, with lots of helpful pics, how to do really quite sophisticated and beautiful things, such as creating 3D bar graphs directly from a worksheet. Your accountant will blush.
The book is written for Windows users, but Mac users will probably recognise enough to be getting on with (the programs are different but not so different to render the book utterly useless). It's not exactly a page-turner, but a half hour with it sure is rewarding. --Liz Bailey
The "Essential Computers" series covers all aspects of computer use, and is written in clear everyday language for users at entry level. The text is illustrated step-by-step with colour screen grabs from the software package used.
