In AD 410 the Roman world suffered an unprecedented catastrophe. For the first time in 800 years a barbarian army, led by the Visigoth king Alaric, sacked the ancient city of Rome. About the Author

Daniel Costa was born in Transylvania. Living in the declining days of Communism, he has always been interested in the end of empires. While a political refugee, he lived in Rome sponsored by the UN and spent much of the time exploring the forces that drove the Romans, early Germans and early Christians. A Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Canada, he is now a psychiatrist in Toronto.
