Synopsis

This work examines the phenomenon of a new style of industry co-ordination, which enables independent companies to work closely together, sometimes even presenting a "single-face" to the outside world. Unlike vertical integration, co-ordination is not achieved by mergers and acquisitions of subcontractors or clients, but through the creation of a "strategic network" of companies working towards the same aims. Based on Jarillo's extensive research, the book analyzes the economic arguments for industry co-ordination, and in which industries it is most likely to occur. The second part focuses on: managerial implications for this type of organization; impact on responsibilities; control without ownership; co-operation instead of competition; and how to set up network alliances and maintain them. A wide range of international cases and examples are featured in the book.
